There’s a New Barbie in Town: Curvy, Tall, and Petite

Barbie

Growing up I never really liked Barbie. I loved dolls, just not Barbie. Something always seemed off with her. She just didn’t look like me. Even my brown barbies didn’t receive love and they too could often be f0und decapitated with their hair cut off. As I got older my disdain for Barbie simply. The more I learned about marketing, advertising, hollywood, and the messages that were being pushed on myself as well as every other little girl, I would grimace at the word Barbie.

Now that I have a daughter I’m even more at odds with Mattels favorite girl. And of course my dear heart loves Barbie. She even wants to watch the cartoon (not gonna happen). Well today, Barbie did something that made even me smile. They introduced three new body shapes, and various new skin tones.

According to Time, “Faced with changes in beauty ideals, shifting demographics and ongoing criticism of Barbie’s impossible proportions, Mattel decided to remake the iconic blonde. The new body shapes follow the addition of new skin tones and hair textures in 2015. Combined, the changes give Barbie a range of diverse looks that better reflect 21st century America.”

Come on, exhale with me. As a full figured woman and as a mom that is constantly trying to build her daughters self-esteem, this thrills me. You mean that they finally see us, the girls with curves? The various brown beauties? Hey, I think I’m a little hyped!

This was a top secret project called Project Dawn. The workers couldn’t even go home and discuss it with their spouses for the two years they worked on it. And well, I think it was worth the wait.

So what do you think? Are you as excited about these dolls as I am? You can buy them right now on barbie.com. If you’re interested in learning more about the story behind the new Barbies, please visit the Time.com for their extensive story.
